About Aldermere

A residential college of 5,800 students, eight colleges and one very old library, founded by royal charter in 1864.

Our purpose

Lux et libertas: light and liberty

Aldermere was founded in 1864 by a group of teachers who believed that a first-rate education should not depend on birth or wealth. We still teach the way they did - in small groups, face to face, with time to think - and we still judge ourselves by who we let in.

The Aldermere way

Four things we will not give up

The tutorial

Two or three students, one tutor, one essay, one hour of argument. Every week.

The colleges

Eight small communities where you live, dine and are looked after.

The libraries

Two million books and a reading room that stays open until midnight.

Open doors

Places are offered on merit alone, and the Aldermere Promise covers the cost.

In their words

Aldermere taught me that a good question is worth more than a quick answer. I have spent my whole career asking them.
