The college orchestra takes Brahms to twelve small towns

Sixty student musicians spent the summer playing Brahms's Second Symphony in village halls, market squares and one converted cattle barn.

The Aldermere College Orchestra's summer tour visited twelve towns within a day's drive of the college, none of which has a concert hall. Tickets were free; the orchestra asked only that each town find a local choir or band to share the programme.

In Hartley Green the audience of 400 was larger than the town's population. In Wexcombe the orchestra played in a barn with the doors open to the evening, and a herd of cows stood at the fence for the whole of the second movement.

The tour will run again next summer, with applications from towns opening in January.
