Student engineers' timber footbridge wins a national prize

A 24-metre footbridge designed and built by third-year engineers now carries walkers across the Mill Reach - and has won the Young Engineers' Award.

The brief was simple and hard: span the river with local timber, carry a crowd of two hundred, and be built by students in a single summer. The team of eleven tested forty scale models in the Harwell workshop before settling on a shallow arch of laminated larch.

Judges praised the bridge for "engineering that looks as though it belongs where it stands". It will carry spectators at the Head of the River regatta in October.
